Why
am I only seeing the time and no date? |
You get the time for the current day and the date and time
for everything else. |
On
my earlier message it said I had one new reply but it was
nowhere to be seen? |
If
it says 1 reply it actually is just registering your initial
post. When it says 2 is when you have a reply. |
Who
sets up the folder headings for each board? |
The
CMs are the only ones with the authority to set up folders. |
Are
they an “across the board” standard for everyone
or do we get to choose our own folders? |
At
first they are going to have an “across the board”
standard. Once we have started posting and feeling things
out we can make requests to the CMs about making new folders. |
Can
folders be "closed"? |
There
is the ability to close folders in special cases and that
is a function that can only be done by a staff member. |
When
I do a search on my membername it says "no match".
I have posted on this board quite a bit. Why doesn’t
it return results? |
The
search only searches what is in the text field of the messages,
not the membername. So you won't be able to pull up every
post by a membername, unless that membername is included in
the text of the message. |
If
we cannot search by membername on the boards, how do we find
our older posts? |
Try
searching for the name that you sign your posts with. For
example, I sign all my posts with “Jennifer” a
search for “Jennifer” would bring up all the posts
on that board with “Jennifer” in the text. Of
course, there are a zillion “Jennifers” so I may
want to try “:c)Jennifer” or something.
Also
check out the "Posting" section of this page for
more tips on finding your posts and other ways to search. |
And
another way to find posts... |
If
you were replying to a post or wanted to find one that you
had read recently, use the drop down "show me" menu
on the main page. You will find the menu next to the "Start
a new discussion" button on the top folder. Use that
menu and choose "I've recently seen" to see your
most recently viewed posts. |
| I
saw that some people have different pics near their username.
How did they get them? |
CLs
and CMs have the added option of putting a pic (called an
avatar) with their name. It is not a feature with all usernames. |
Is
there a tutorial? |
We
do have a tutorial/demo article here
and a quick overview of the boards here.
|
Can
I still use the “embed” feature on the boards?
|
No.
No one was supposed to be using embed at all. Many did, from
word of mouth, but it was an admin feature and not to be used
regularly to view posts due to the strain it put on board
servers. |
| It
says my last visit to the board was at 10 am, but that’s
not true. I was here at 1pm. What happened? |
It
will only register the time of your visit if you're logged
in. |
With
the “Last visit to the board” feature, what if
I can’t post but want to scan really fast. I don’t
want people to be offended that I was here and didn’t
post to them. |
If
you know you won’t have time to post, don’t log
in. It will only update that time if you are logged in. Of
course, if you aren’t logged in the board won’t
remember what posts you have and haven’t seen so you’ll
have to remember that on your own. |
| Messages
that I had read are now marked unread! |
If
you leave (log out) and then come back your settings won’t
restore until you log back in. |
How
do I know if I have read all the responses in a discussion? |
*In
the main folder list you will notice dot icons at the far
right. This indicates that there are responses to this message
that you have not yet read - the numbers change telling you
how many responses you have not yet read. For example: "4
new" or "3 new of 7". When you click on the
message title you will be taken to either the message itself
(if you have not opened it previously) or to the first response
that you have not read. Notice at the bottom of the message
(left) that the response number indicates where you are in
the sequence. Once you have read all of the posts to a particular
message the dots go away and the word "new" goes
away too! |
How
can I mark all the messages as "read" before I leave
the board? |
They
have the "read/unread" request on their list of
things to do. In the meantime, when you are inside a discussion,
before you leave that discussion click on the last number
available for replies. By viewing the last post in the discussion
you will have marked the whole discussion as being read. |
| I
don’t want to go through all the replies but I want
to move to the next discussion. How? |
Click
on the last number shown. This will take you to the end
of the discussion and you can then click “next discussion”.
**Update:
you can now move to the next discussion by the "next
discussion" link inside of the post.

Why
isn't my message posted right away? Why does it tell me it
will be posted shortly? |
Your
messages basically *are* posted right away. The delay, if
any, is usually just a few seconds. Try refreshing the board
when you get back to it. You may have to refresh a couple
times, but this works for me 99% of the time. |
What
about *nt* posts…. Can we do those anymore? |
Sort
of. LOL The first 79 characters you type are shown in the
outline. So, you could treat that as a 'title'. You could
put an 'n/t' at the end of it to indicate "no need to
open", if you wanted to. |
It
is so hard to find my posts! Help! |
A
few suggestions: Use the pull down menu to the right and pull
down to “I’ve recently seen” and voila!
You will see posts you visited or are looking to see responses
to. Or if it is a post of your own that you are looking for,
you can find it in the outline view by looking for posts that
are bold (remember, you have to be logged in at the time).
Or you can use the Ctrl-F feature to search for usernames,
words, etc on a page. |
I
need another good way to find my posts! |
After
you post...go back to your post and add it to favorites!
You can always empty out your faves later on after this
board is gone...but in the meantime, you will be able to
find all threads you've posted on.
Also,
if you were replying to a post or wanted to find one that
you had read recently, use the drop down "show me"
menu on the main page. You will find the menu next to the
"Start a new discussion" button on the top folder.
Use that menu and choose "I've recently seen"
to see your most recently viewed posts.
|
Will
posts change colors after being read? |
In
place of the changing colors, we have the "1 new of
5" type things and the little red dots that tell you
there are unread messages in that thread.
**Update:
Now discussions that you have been in and read part of will
turn green. In outline view, the posts you have read will
turn green.
|
The
posts are never in the same place. They are always chaging! |
The
posts are not fixed in one spot they "float" which
means they roll up and down to the top or bottom with the
discussions with the most recent posts/replies at the top
of the folder. |
Each
new time I come to the board, it seems to have reset itself
somehow, my posts are no longer bold in outline view and posts
I have read show up as unread. Why? |
It's
because you weren't logged in. You can log in either by posting
or by clicking "log in" at the top of the board.
Once logged in your settings will be restored. |
I've
clicked on a few messages but instead of opening up the initial
post it is opening up a reply to that post. Why? |
It's
only doing that because you've already read the previous responses.
It brings you to the first unread post. |
How
do I find my message that I posted before? Does this mean
that once a message is off the board you can't get it back
again or what am I missing? |
There
are a couple ways. One is to click the word "more"
just under the folder. This will show you more of the discussions
that are in that folder.
**Another
way is to open the outline view and scroll down until I see
a post that is in bold. Posts that are written by your or
are in replies to your posts will be in bold. If you are looking
for a post that is inside another discussion and it is a long
discussion, you will need to click on the discussion title
to open the rest of the discussion.
**Update:
Posts made by you are no longer bold. A different way to find
your posts is to open the outline view and use Ctrl-F to search
for your member name. |
Can
I post my message without previewing it? |
**Yes.
When you reply to a message, scroll down to where you can
see the message you are replying to (past the Preview Message
button). You will see a POST YOUR REPLY button. If you click
on that while on the Edit screen, it will bypass the Preview
screen and post your message right away.
**Update:
This feature is no longer available. I know it has been
requested to bring it back.
|
On
the old board style, you can reply to a reply...and it kind
of can become a discussion w/in a discussion. That doesn't
seem to be the case here. Seems as though you've got one topic,
and you reply to that period. So, if someone wants to reply
to your thoughts on a subject, how can you specify that? |
In
outline view, you will be better able to see who is replying
to whom. Also, at the top of the post it will say, “from:cl-luvbnamommy
to:happymommy”. Another thing you can do is "quote"
people. It's a lot easier now since you can still see the
message you are replying to while in Edit mode. Just scroll
down, highlight with your mouse what you want to copy. Right-click
and select Copy and Paste it into the Edit box. |
Can
I add a signature line to my posts? |
No,
we do not have an automatic signature option but you can do
as many did on the current boards - keep your siggie in a
text file and while you are posting to your message boards,
you can copy and paste it directly into the messages. |
Why
does it show the number of posts posted under some names but
not all? |
The
number of messages posted only gets displayed if you have
posted more than 50 posts. |
In
the folder view when I hit "more" I can only find
the discussions from today. If the board never archives, where
are the discussions from previous days? |
In
the folder view, once you have gotten to the end of today's
posts you will need to scroll *all* the way to the bottom
of the page to click "more". That will start taking
you through the older posts. |
On
the board it says there are thousands of posts, but the boards
just started. Where is that number coming from? |
It
is counting all of the archived messages in that number. |
When
you post, you lose the option to go back to the folder - it's
either the discussion or the main board again. Or am I missing
something? |
Use
the folder view. It has a pop up box and then you can pick
through the conversations you want to read and/or respond
to. One note about this, is that it will open a whole new
window, so you'll probably have to close out each one as you
go. I've got one right now open and replying to you. When
I post this, then I'll close the window and click on another. |

Why
don't I have an "email me" link on my profile? |
When
others view your profile, they will see an email link. You
just won't see one on your own profile. |
Will
we be able to redirect our profiles? |
No.
But there is a link near your name at the top of your profile
that says, “Visit my webpage”. When you enter
your webpage URL, just make it your profile URL and have a
link to your webpage on your profile. |
I
saw that some people have different pics near their username.
How did they get them? |
CLs
and CMs have the added option of putting a pic (called an
avatar) with their name. It is not a feature with all usernames. |
The
“Visit my Website” link in my profile is messed
up even though I entered my address correctly. |
Make
sure you include the "http://" at the front of your
URL. |
|
|
What
are those guys in the little blue hats? |
That
is the graphic that is put next to someone on your "friends"
list. It shows up in the outline view also to help you find
posts from your “friends”. |
What
else is the “friends” list for? |
There
are some sections of your profile that you can choose to only
make available to your friends. It helps add a little more
privacy and security. |
How
do I view/change my "friends" and "ignore"
lists? |
Go
into your profile (you'll find the link at the top of the
board). Click on "update your profile". The last
tab is labeled "Friends" and there you will find
the "friends" and "ignore" lists. |
Who
can I put on my ignore list? |
You
will be able to ignore any name you put on your list. |
Oh
No! I ignored someone now how do I get them back!?!?! |
Go
into your profile (you'll find the link at the top of the
board and you need to be logged in). Click on "update
your profile". The last tab is labeled "Friends"
and there you will find the "friends" and "ignore"
lists. You can change them there. |

Some
people have yellow or blue hats next to their name. What are
those? |
The
yellow hat means that person is a Community Leader. The blue
hat means that person is a Community Moderator. |

|
Can
I get rid of the red dots and "1 new of 5" message
w/out reading them all? |
Yes!
When you are in the post, make sure to click the number of
the last reply in that discussion. Then when you go back to
the main window (you may need to refresh) it will mark all
the replies as having been read. |
|
|
What
will happen with archiving? |
With
our new board format, there will be no more archiving as we
know it. All messages posted to the new boards will remain
live and you will be able to reply to them and float them
to the top. Our current archives are being transferred to
the new board format and will be accessible via the "archives"
link at the top of the board. The archived messages from our
previous boards will be available on a read-only basis. |
Can
I bump a post from the archives to the top of the board? |
No.
They are in read only format and will have to be copied &
pasted to be brought back into discussion. |
How
do I search the archives? |
You
can search the archives for a keyword using the search option.
You can also use the Crtl-F trick while in the folder or outline
view. In the folder view you will have to repeat the Crtl-F
for each page. |
Why
are some of the posts missing from the archives? The posts
stop a few days ago. |
The
messages on the current "old" board will still
need to be transferred over after that board is archived.
It hasn't been archived yet since it is the current "old"
board.
**Update:
all the posts from the old boad system should be in the
arhives now. If you find your board is missing archives,
please let your CL know so it can be fixed.

|
How
can I search in the Outline View? |
If
you press "Ctrl-F" while on the Outline page it
brings up a "Find" box. This allows you to search
for words on the page. You can search for posts from a specific
member by typing in their membername. |
How
do I search the archives? |

How
do I search for a specific date? |
When
the search feature is fully functional, you will be able
to use it to search by date. Until then....
Here's
the general format - I'm using the Get Organized board in
the example.
Paste this into your browser: http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/listsf.asp?webtag=iv-hggetorganiz&ctx=4194304&cacheTag=x9-38&ld=7%2F14%2F2001+11%3A55&mp=50&sts=3%2F27%2F2003+12%3A10%3A10+PM
That
should take you to a list of archived posts, with posts
from 7/14/2001 at the top. If you look around the middle
of the URL, you'll see where it says "7%2F14%2F2001"
- all you need to do is change the 7, 14, and 2001 to the
date you want, and you can view archives from that date.
The page
of links you get is the same page you'd have gotten if you
went page by page back through all the archives (using the
"more") button. So you won't necessarily see every
link from the date you've punched in. If I were looking for
a post from 7/14, I'd punch 7/15 into the URL, on the assumption
all the threads from the 14th would probably show up among
those 50.
It's
certainly not foolproof; sometimes the title of the post,
and the membername of the last person posting to the thread,
won't ring a bell, so you have to do a lot of opening posts
to check.
|
Will
someone be able to key my name into the search box and find
everything I have ever posted? |
Usernames
will not show up on search results. Any text in the post will.
If your username is in the text of the post, it will show
up in the search results, however, no one can simply enter
your username and find every post you have ever posted. And
the search function will only search in the board you are
currently on, not all of iVillage. |

When
I open a discussion in outline view it changes to a view of
that discussion. When I click “all discussions”
to go back to where I was, it takes me back to the top! |
A
way around this is to right click and open the discussion
in a new window. When you are done, just close the window
to go back to the outline view and it will be just where you
left it. |
Every
time I click on a post in outline view it opens a new window!
Help! |
The
first time you click a post in outline view it will open a
new window. if you leave that window open, then next post
you click on in outline view will open in that window. |
Can
I set Outline View to be my default? |
No,
but you can save the outline view in your favorites instead
of the main board link. Right click on outline view and select
"open in new window". In that new window click outline
view again. This will open outline view in a complete browser
(with buttons and everything). Save the URL for that window
in your favorites.
|
Can
I open the entire thread for just one discussion? |
It
takes a little doing, but, yes.
Click
on the discussion you want to read. In the URL line change
the word "message" to "outline" and
change the "msg" near the end of the URL to "tid".
That will open the outline view of the discussion. To get
back, just hit the back button or chose a post to read in
the thread.
|
How
can I search in the Outline View? |
If
you press "Ctrl-F" while on the Outline page it
brings up a "Find" box. This allows you to search
for words on the page. You can search for posts from a specific
member by typing in their membername. |
